Spotlight: Joseph Kamau, the vet who treats elephants

by Lucia Ferrari

Joseph Kamau (1998) spends most of his working life with animals that weigh more than a small car. As a wildlife vet with a conservation trust in Kenya, he treats injured elephants, rhinos and the occasional very annoyed buffalo.

"People think it is the size that is difficult," he says. "It is the logistics. You are planning an operation with a team of twelve, a helicopter and a patient who does not want to be found."

He traces it back to a Riverside biology field trip and to one teacher who let him keep a notebook of every animal he saw for a year. He mentors students interested in veterinary and conservation careers through Riverside Connect, and says he is happy to meet for coffee in Nairobi on Fridays.
