Every Saturday morning, in a borrowed classroom in Toronto, Mei-Lin Zhou (2008) opens the doors of a coding school that does not charge a cent. Her students are nurses, bus drivers, retired teachers and teenagers, and her one rule is that everyone leaves on Sunday having built something useful.
"I learned to code in the Riverside library on machines that took four minutes to start," she says. "The point was never the machine. The point was that somebody let me in."
She is looking for volunteer tutors, online or in person; details are on the jobs board in Riverside Connect.
