In the autumn of 1979, a first-year biology student called Elsa Lindqvist planted an acorn by the Hall steps as part of a project on growth rates. The project got a B. The acorn is now the tallest thing on campus.
Elsa, now a botanist in Sweden, came back in the spring to measure it. "It is doing better than my project did," she said. The college has agreed that the oak will appear in every class photograph from now on, whether it wants to or not.
